Guwahati: As many as 149 Assam Police personnel have been infected with the COVID-19 virus in the line of duty, out of which 30 have recovered.

"Till July 4th, 2020 149 Assam Police personnel have tested Covid positive out of whom 30 have recovered. Personnel under home quarantine 1,114", G P Singh, ADGP Law and Order tweeted.

This has been reported at a time when several Government officials have tested positive for the Wuhan originating virus strain. Earlier in the day, it came to light the Additional Deputy Commissioner of Kamrup (Metro), Chinmoy Nath, had tested positive for the virus.

The ADC had reportedly been suffering from fever and cough, due to which he went for a swab test on Wednesday, and his results were subsequently declared 2 days later. He has been shifted to the Guwahati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for treatment.

Later, it came to light that two Government servants discharging their duties at the Raj Bhawan had also tested positive. As a consequence, the Biswajit Pegu led district administration has sealed the campus, situated atop the Kharguli hills, with immediate effect.

These developments have come to light in the wake of the steady and alarming rise in COVID-19 cases in the Kamrup (M) area that has necessitated yet another lockdown in the capital area. The lockdown that came into effect on June 28, was brought into effect against the discovery of a multitude of COVID-19 positive cases in the city that did not have any travel history whatsoever. In the first phase of the lockdown, all shops -- apart from ones related to medical services -- have been closed down.

In Assam, a total of 9,799 cases have been reported and in several areas, such as Jorhat, the lockdown is once again making a comeback due to fears of community transmissions.
