MANGALDAI: With 157 people testing COVID-19 positive in Darrang district on Thursday, the total number of COVID-19 infected persons has gone up to 1,222 while one patient from the district died at Tezpur Medical College and Hospital.

On the other hand, with 26 more inmates testing COVID-19 positive, the total number of COVID-19 infected inmates in Mangaldai District Jail has gone up to 51. All the 26 COVID-19 positive inmates of the jail were shifted to the Special Jail for COVID-19 inmates at Singimari Model Hospital near Hajo in Kamrup (rural) district on Thursday evening amidst tight security arrangements.

Talking to The Sentinel on Thursday afternoon, Darrang Deputy Commissioner Dilip Kumar Borah said that all the 26 previously infected inmates of the jail were undergoing treatment at the COVID Hospital at Mangaldai Civil Hospital.

The COVID casualty at Tezpur Medical College and Hospital has been identified as one Ratan Saha (42) of ward no. 4 of Kharupetia Municipality Board. His wife has also been tested positive and is undergoing treatment at Tezpur Medical College and Hospital. Meanwhile, the district administration has made all arrangements to perform the funeral at the public crematorium at Kharupetia as per COVID-19 protocol.

On the other hand, the district administration on Thursday arranged for rapid tests at 11 locations of the district where swab sample was collected from 396 persons and 40 persons have tested positive. Two employees of the office of the Deputy Commissioner of Darrang also tested positive on Thursday.
