GUWAHATI: Two key members of the Popular Front of India's (PFI) Assam unit have been detained in Barpeta. The PFI's Assam unit is led by Abu Sama Ahmed as president, and Jakir Hussain serves as state secretary.

Sahidul Islam, the leader of the Campus Front of India, another prohibited organisation, was also detained by police (CFI). Officials reported that police seized four mobile phones, 1.5 lakh rupees, and several flyers belonging to the two organisations from their possession.

The PFI was prohibited by the centre in September last year in accordance with the Illegal Activities (Prevention) Act. PFI and its affiliates have engaged in illegal acts that, according to the Home Ministry, are "prejudicial to the integrity, sovereignty, and security of the country" and have the potential to destabilise communal harmony.

It stated that PFI members had previously engaged in a number of illegal operations and violent killings to instill a reign of terror in the public's mind.

Popular Front of India (PFI) is an Islamic political organisation in India, that engages in a radical and exclusivist style of Muslim minority politics.

Together with the PFI, organisations connected to it were also prohibited. They include the National Confederation of Human Rights Organisations (NCHRO), Campus Front of India (CF), All India Imams Council (AIIC), National Women's Front, Junior Front, Empower India Foundation, and Rehab Foundation, Kerala.

In an effort to bring about total normalcy in the northeastern states, security authorities have detained up to 107 members and supporters of the outlawed United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I) since 2022, according to army officials.

The army said in a statement that over the past year, security forces have stepped up their efforts to bring about normality in Assam, particularly in Upper Assam, where some ULFA (I) pockets are still active.
