200 join Congress in Silchar to oust BJP government

SILCHAR: Buoyed by the Karnataka victory, the APCC president Bhupen Bora called the Congressmen to prepare themselves for a concerted fight in Assam too to oust the BJP government. Addressing a workers’ meet here, Bora said, Congress was all set to regain power in 2024. At least 200 workers from parties like BJP, AGP, TMC and AIUDF had joined the Congress during Bora’s visit in Silchar.

Bora said, stalwarts like late P A Sangma, Gegong Apang in the past left the Congress, but the grand old party was not shattered. “Congress is not merely a political party, rather it is ideology, a way of rendering service to the nation, and hence individual does not matter in the party, it is the ideology that drives the Congress in all weathers,” he said.

However, all the party MLAs from Barak Valley were conspicuous with their absence in the otherwise well attended workers meet. Karimganj MLA as well as the APCC working president Kamalakha Dey Purkayastha skipped the meet, but he was seen participating in the rally in Silchar itself in memory of 11 language martyrs. Purkayastha however joined Bora later in the evening in an interaction session with the leading citizens of the town.

Earlier in the workers’ meet Bora lambasted his colleagues as he said, some of the leaders were busy in delivering lectures which amounted to revolt. This pressure tactic would yield no result, he quipped.

Relation between Bora and Kamalakha soured following the appointment of Abhijit Paul as the Silchar district Congress president. Kamalakha opposed the appointment and complained to the AICC general secretary Jitendra Singh. He openly criticized Bora for removing the erstwhile district president Tamal Kanti Banik. Misbshul Islam Laskar and Khalil Uddin Mazumder, the other two MLAs from Cachar too opposed the appointment of Paul as the president. Significantly none of these three MLAs as well as Banik attended the workers’ meet.
