2019: A mixed bag for people of Demow

DEMOW: The year 2019 was not a lucky year for the people of Demow and couple of unfortunate incidents took place. However, there were few good incidents too which took place in Demow.

A tragic accident took place in September 23 near Demow in Thowra where 10 people died and several were injured. In another accident near Demow in Bamunbani in the month of February this year, four people died. Under Demow Forest Beat Office in Panidehing Bam Rajabari Borgaon, 32 vultures were found dead in the month of March this year. Two wild elephants were found dead near Demow in Majumalia and Majumalia Gohain Gaon in the month of November.

An ATM of State Bank of India (SBI) which was installed near Demow Central Market was looted in the month of May. Thefts also took place in temples and mosques this year in Demow.

On the other hand, there were few good incidents too. In the field of education, Demow schools showed good performance in the HSLC examination, 2019. HCDG College near Demow in Nitaipukhuri received the Best HS Examination Centre, 2019 award from AHSEC on the 35th foundation day of the AHSEC in June, and Dr. Diganta Gogoi, Head of the Assamese Department in Nitaipukhuri HCDG College, received the North East Shiksha Ratna Award conferred by the All India Journalists’ Union in December.

For the first time, the Directorate of Cultural Affairs presented the Bhimbor Deori Award 2019 to Dr. Bhim Kanta Barua, educationist and renowned linguistic as well as retired Professor of the Assamese Department in Dibrugarh University, in November. In the field of Sports, Dipak Gogoi who represented India in the NAC International Mr. Universe 2019 in Germany claimed the second position.
