DOOMDOOMA: The 21st death anniversary of journalist and writer Nirode Chaudhury, who was born in Doomdooma, was observed at a solemn function at Doomdooma Sakha Xahitya Xabha (DSXX) Bhavan on Wednesday.
The programme got underway with lighting of lamp in front of the portrait of the writer by Arjun Baruah, president of Tinsukia Zila Xahitya Xabha (TZXX). Thereafter, the commemorative meeting was held with president of DSXX, Bimala Baruah in the chair. Deben Deka, secretary of DSXX, anchored the meeting and recited a poem that became popular on social media.
Dipak Ranjan Baruah, Associate Professor, Assamese department, Doomdooma College, was the chief speaker of the programme and in his speech he dwelt at length about life and achievements of Chaudhury as a journalist, writer, script writer and song composer, besides mentioning about his popularity in the coverage of the sensational case of session judge Upendra Nath Rajkhowa's killing of his entire family in popular Assamese weekly Asam Bani. He lamented the non-availability of the books written by Chaudhury even in his home town Doomdooma and appealed to all to extend co-operation for keeping his memory alive.
The function was also attended by Chaudhury's sister Sarojini Mahanta and nephew Tridib Mahanta, manager of Baghjan TE. Tridib Mahanta in his speech promised to present the books of Nirode Chaudhury to DSXX and Doomdooma College library while Chaudhury's wife Dr Indira Chaudhury, although could not be present personally in the programme, voluntarily offered some financial assistance. The meeting was also addressed by Nirala Chaudhury, former Headmistress, Jawahar Hindi High School, and Wasifur Rahman.
