29th foundation day of Tezpur University celebrated

TEZPUR: Tezpur University observed its 29th foundation day on Friday with a daylong programme in a befitting manner. Two orations, one by Prof. TG Sitharam, Director of IIT Guwahati (IITG), who delivered the foundation day oration as the chief guest and Prof Pulickel Ajayan, noted scientist in the field of nanotechnology and Benjamin M and Mary Greenwood Professor of Engineering at Rice University, USA delivered the other oration at the KBR auditorium of the university.

Speaking in front of the august gathering, Prof. Sitharam discussed in details the 'National Education Policy (NEP) 2020: Heralding New Era in Higher Education Building resilient universities for tomorrow.'

Prof. Sitharam emphasized the importance of NEP, which he opined would bring ground-breaking reforms in the education system in India. "If implemented in the right spirit, India would be leader in education sector, he remarked. He also added that NEP would make teaching and learning interactive, where focus on research would be right from the school level. Citing example of IITG, which has already taken steps to implement NEP phase wise, he urged all the Higher Educational Institutions to focus on thrust areas of NEP. However, Prof. Sitharam also cautioned that implementing NEP will be a challenge and one needs to be mindful of the fragmented higher educational ecosystem of India and convert the challenges into opportunities.

Delivering the foundation day oration, Prof. Pulickel Ajayan discussed the issue of excellence and sustaining excellence in academia. He elaborated the basic tenets of creating excellence in academia, which he opined could be achieved through creativity, motivation and critical experiments. Prof. Ajayan further pointed out that discoveries made in laboratories of educational institutions needs to be commercialized properly. "Our experiments/ideas need to be commercialized and promoted, otherwise these ideas often plunge into the valleys of death," Prof Ajayan remarked. He urged all to create proper research eco system to nurture such ideas.

Prof VK Jain, Vice Chancellor, Tezpur University, while delivering the welcome address briefly highlighted the journey of Tezpur University towards the pursuit of excellence. He mentioned some of the notable achievements of the University and highlighted the research and innovation culture of the institution. He urged all to participate in the journey of the university towards excellence and sustenance of its quality education. Prof VK Nath, chairperson of the organizing committee proposed the vote of thanks at the end of the function.
