Three government officials in Guwahati were arrested by the Bureau of Investigations Economic Offences (BIEO) on Monday for their involvement in an alleged rice scam.

The accused Lakheswar Saikia is a chief commercial manager of Northeast Frontier Railways, the other two accused namely Dhirimba Hazarika and Tilak Chandra Bhattacharya are retired officers of the Food Corporation of India (FCI).

As per a police official investigating the case, the matter came to light after an investigation was launched into 2013-2014 alleged Rs.1.2 crore rice scam. The case was first taken up by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) but was later transferred to the BIEO at the court's direction. The rice was being illegally transported from Assam to Arunachal Pradesh. This was done by fudging bank statements and clearances.
