308 Assam Police personnel test COVID-19 positive

Guwahati: From officers to constables, personnel from all the ranks of the Assam Police have tested COVID-19 positive in the last few weeks, and the number of cases among men in uniform has now skyrocketed to 308.

"July 7th 2020 - Assam Police 308 personnel tested positive for Covid to date, out of whom 68 have recovered", ADGP Law and Order G P Singh wrote in a tweet moments earlier.

In a presser that was held yesterday, Assam DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta has said that that the news of police personnel getting infected is hardly surprising due to the fact that the pandemic has gripped all. The DGP also assured that despite these COVID-19 cases detected within the ranks of the Assam Police, the forces would continue to discharge their duties as per the requirements.

The COVID-19 situation has turned grim in Assam with the state reporting its biggest ever single day spike on Saturday. After this massive bump in the number of cases, the Assam health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma declared that Assam's Guwahati city has officially entered the pandemic stage.
