32 candidates file nomination in 5 LACs under Tezpur Election District

TEZPUR: Altogether 32 candidates of different political parties of the State and independent candidates under 71 Dhekiajuli, 72 Barchala, 73 Tezpur, 74 Rangapara and 75 Sootea – the five LACs in Tezpur Election District - filed their nominations before the respective Returning Officers of their LACs concerned, which will go to polls in the first phase to be held on March 27.

Two candidates – Nayanmoni Choudhury of SUCI (C ) and Padma Hazarika of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had filed their nominations on Monday for 73-Tezpur and 75-Sootea LACs respectively. This takes the total number of candidates who have filed nominations under Tezpur Election District to 32.

Seven candidates filed their nominations before the Returning Officer for 71-Dhekiajuli LAC, Rohan Kumar Jha. They are Ashok Singhal (BJP), Ranjay Basumatary (VPI), Sanjoy Dey (BGP), Benudhar Nath (INC), Tarun Sahu (Independent), Satrughana Sasoni (AJP) and Jagya Ram Mirdha (Independent).

Five candidates filed nominations for 72-Borchalla LAC before Returning Officer Lachit Kumar Das – Ganesh Kumar Limbu (BJP), Ram Prasad Sharma (INC), Upen Raj Nath (AJP), Hemanta Kumar Adhikary (Ind), Pampal Borah (Ind). A total of nine candidates filed their nominations for 73-Tezpur LAC before Returning Officer-cum-District Election Office Manvendra Pratap Singh.

AGP candidate Prithiraj Rabha is the son of Assam icon Kalaguru Bishnu Prasad Rabha. He joined the AGP party recently and filed his nomination in 73 Tezpur LAC. Rabha was accompanied by BJP leader Piyush Hazarika and thousands of AGP-BJP party workers. A procession was taken out from Swahid Bakori field in support of Prithiraj Rabha and his supporters waving the BJP-AGP flag assembled in front of the DC office.

Similarly, Congress candidate Anuj Kumar Mech, accompanied by a large number of Congress workers, filed his nomination papers. The AGP denied party ticket to Brindaban Goswami – one of the founder leaders of the party and former Education Minister. He also filed nomination for 73 Tezpur LAC as an independent candidate. Jiten Borthakur (Independent), Sheikh Mohammad Sadique (Independent), Mahendra Bhuyan (NCP), Janmoni Borah (Assam Jatiya Parishad), Alok Nath (Independent) and Akash Jyoti Singha (Independent) also submitted their nomination papers for Tezpur LAC.

On the other hand, for 74-Rangapara LAC, seven candidates filed nominations before Returning Officer Diganta Baishya. They are Abhijit Hazarika (INC), Krishna Kamal Tanti (BJP), Abdul Jalil (Janta Dal United), Jitendra Kumar Sharma (VPI), Ajoy Tanti (AJP), Bijoy Tirkey (Ind) and Matthew Topno (Independent). Meanwhile, two candidates, Praneswar Basumatary (INC) and Anila Basumatary (VPI), filed their nominations for 75-Sootea LAC. The last date for withdrawal of nominations is March 12.
