GUWAHATI: Assam Medical College, Gauhati Medical College, and FAAMC in Barpeta are among the 40 medical institutions throughout the country whose recognition has been revoked by the National Medical Commission (NMC), marking a significant step. This choice was made after recent inspections revealed that these institutions did not adhere to the NMC's criteria.
However, within 30 days, the concerned medical colleges may appeal this decision; the initial appeal must be filed to the NMC. The institutions may seek the Union Ministry of Health for additional relief if the appeal is denied.
According to a report, over the past two months, almost 40 medical institutions have lost their accreditation due to their failure to adhere to the requirements imposed by the National Medical Commission (NMC).
As per sources, more than 100 institutions in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Assam, Puducherry, Punjab, and West Bengal have faced similar action. According to an NMC official, the colleges were de-recognized because they failed to adhere to the NMC's established standards and had numerous issues with CCTV installation, biometric attendance, and open teaching posts.
Moreover, Government statistics show a significant increase in medical colleges since 2014.
According to Bharati Pravin Pawar, Minister of State for Health, the number of medical institutions has increased by 69% from 387 in 2014 to 654 as of this writing. He made this statement to the Rajya Sabha in February.
Additionally, the number of MBBS seats has increased by 94% from 51,348 in 2014 to 99,763 in the present, and the number of PG seats has increased by 10% from 31,185 in 2014 to 64,559 in the present.
Furthermore, the NMC's decision strives to safeguard the standards for high-quality medical education and guarantee that students receive the greatest instruction and training available. The appeals procedure gives the impacted institutions a chance to address the found issues and restore recognition.
