DIGBOI: Margherita sub division, constituting five police stations in the Tinsukia district of upper Assam, has recorded 40 Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985, (NDPS) cases registered with 83 arrests in the past 8 months from January to August 2022.

The data no doubt reveals the success rate of the combined team of the sub-divisional unit of the police stations in an encouraging format yet the rise in the networks of drug traders and the act of procurement, marketing, peddling, and consumption of various forms of contraband has also gained momentum significantly.

Except for Digboi and Pengaree, all the remaining police stations of the sub division including Bordumsa, Lekhapani and Jagun share a common boundary with the neighbouring Arunachal's Changlang and Namsai districts that have been providing a safe passage for the drug smugglers and kingpin to enter from nearby Myanmar thus making a safe headway into Assam.

Bordumsa being a porous border location alone recorded 12 NDPS cases registered over 8 months which is the highest figure with 20 arrests while Digboi often considered a drug hub has recorded 25 arrests which are the highest in the sub-division within the period of 8 months notably registering only 7 cases. '8 more arrests in two separate NDPS cases were secured so far in the month of September' by Bordumsa police, added a police official sharing the data with The Sentinel.

Ironically, Pengaree Police station which witnesses protests and uproar off and on against the drug abuse in severe drug and opium-hit pockets like Inthem, Muganpather, Nagapother, Tokopather and Dibrujan, and Dwarmara, etc has recorded the least number of NDPS cases which stands at 3 only with 7 arrests over a period of 8 months. A total of 8 NDPS cases were registered at Lekhapani with 14 arrests is double the arrests figure of Pengaree.

However, Margherita registered 10 NDPS cases while securing 17 arrests of the accused. The statistics also revealed the proactive nature of Assam Police team which witnessed a sudden rise in the number of arrests figuring 8, 15, 16, 16 in the last 4 months chronologically from May to August respectively while the cases showed a fluctuating trend with 3 alone in the month of August while maintaining steady for the preceding 3 months from May to July.

There is no denying the fact that with Tinsukia SP Debajit Deori, Assam Police team has been delivering commendably in handling cases of other natures too well over a period of time along with their persistent efforts as a part of the war against drugs, yet the menace of drug abuse with its venoms is adversely affecting the younger generation, the students, in particular, falling as 'soft and easy target of the peddlers'.
