Guwahati: As many as 402 personnel of the Assam Police have tested COVID-19 positive to date. Out of these, 116 cops have recovered from the infectious disease.
"July 9th 2020 - @assampolice 402 personnel have tested positive for Covid-19 till date out of whom 116 have recovered. All others are stable", Gyanendra Pratap Singh, ADGP (Law and Order) wrote in a tweet.
Many of these personnel -- tasked with keeping the peace in the midst of the lockdown -- have been infected in the line of duty. However, the personnel continue to keep vigil despite being subjected to high risk, especially in hotspot areas such as the ones around Guwahati.
Amid the ongoing lockdown in Guwahati city, the police have been keeping tabs on lockdown violations, while at the same time, also charging sums from errant citizens who have been found violating the norms.
In July alone, 150 people have been arrested in connection with violating the rules of the lockdown, while 45 cases have been registered. Meanwhile, Rs. 98,000 has been realized as fine from those not wearing masks in public places.
Across Assam, 4,861 people have been arrested since the beginning of the lockdown period for violating the lockdown rules. At the same time, 37,157 vehicles have been detained, out of which 32,713 are two-wheelers. 3,821 cases have been registered during the lockdown period.
