459 villages flooded in Darrang district

MANGALDAI: The floods caused by heavy rains and rupture of the embankments of Saktola and Nonoi rivers in Darrang district continued to wreak havoc in various parts of the district on Tuesday. As of Monday, 459 villages in Dalgaon, Mangaldai, Patharighat and Sipajhar Revenue Circles of the district have been affected by the flood and a total of 469,241 villagers have been affected. 9347.50 hectares of agricultural land and 341,023 livestock have been affected by the flood.
Guardian Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary visited various flood-hit areas of Sipajhar constituency on Monday to take stock of the situation. The Minister also held a review meeting on the flood situation at the Deputy Commissioner's office and directed to distribute relief items among the flood victims expeditiously.
Mangaldai Parliamentarian Dilip Shaikia, legislators Basanta Das of Mangaldai, Dr Paramananda Rajbongshi of Sipajhar, Mujibur Rahman of Dalgaon and officials of various departments also attended the meeting.
Many roads in the district have been closed for vehicular traffic due to flood. Submerging of the stretch of NH-15 from Piparadokan to Saktola bridge has resulted in halt of traffic movement for the 5th consecutive day.
NDRF and SDRF are continuing their relief operations. 16 relief camps and 83 relief distribution centres have been set up in the district while 2243 quintals of rice, 406.27 quintals of lentils, 125.30 quintals of salt and 11949.00 litres of mustard oil have been distributed among the flood victims in the district till Monday. Baby food has also been distributed. Tarpaulin, candles and biscuits were provided. In addition, 1413 quintals of fodder were distributed.
