DOOMDOOMA: The 12-hour bandh called by Sadou Axam Chutiya Chatra Santha and 48-hour bandh called by All Moran Students’ Union (AMSU) and supported by various ethnic and tribal organizations, including All Sonowal-Kachari Youth Forum and Sadou Axam Matack Yuba-Chatra Sanmilan, passed off peacefully with no report of any untoward incidents from anywhere till the filing of this report.

With shutters down of shops, vehicular traffic remained off the road and the only passenger train DEMU plying between Dibrugarh and Dangri was stopped at Makum junction by the picketers. Arunjyoti Moran, president of AMSU, while thanking the people for supporting the 24-hour bandh called by them, extended full support to the NESO bandh on Tuesday.

On the other hand, while the students of Doomdooma College observed a ‘war-drum beating’ programme on NH-37 just in front of the office of the Circle Officer, Doomdooma Revenue Circle, to register their protest against the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB), the activists of Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba-Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) burnt the effigies of Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal along with copies of CAB.

Dhekiajuli: Along with the rest of the north-eastern States, Dhekiajuli unit of AASU expressed deep resentment against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill on Monday.

The AASU Dhekiajuli unit activists under the leadership of president Shankar Das gathered at the NH-15 in Dhekiajuli town and burnt the effigy of Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal. The protesters shouted anti-BJP and anti-Sonowal slogans.

Dibrugarh: The 12-hour bandh called by All Assam Chutia Students’ Union evoked a total response with life coming to a complete standstill on Monday. The bandh affected education institutions, commercial establishments, and financial institutions. However, certain examinations scheduled were allowed to be held uninterrupted at certain educational institutions. Throughout the day, Thancharali remained to be the primary site of agitation. Protesters, from time to time, came in series and held anti-CAB demonstrations at the site, yards away from the Sadar Thana. While many protesters got emotional and their eyes got teary while protesting, many burnt tyres in a show of strong and stiff resistance against CAB. There was also a naked protest held at Thancharali.

Numaligarh: The 12-hour Assam bandh on Monday paralyzed normal life in Numaligarh. The bandh was called by 16 organizations and tribal student bodies in protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill. During the bandh, vehicles did not ply and the streets wore a deserted look. Most of the business establishments of the market areas remained closed during the bandh. Protesters burnt tyres and blocked roads in Rangajan, Doigrung, Purabangla, Telgaram and many other places in Golaghat district during the bandh and demanded that the Central Government should scrap the bill.

The protesters also shouted slogans against the Bill and the BJP-led governments at the Centre and in the State. The BJP-led Union Government successfully passed the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill in the Lok Sabha on Monday. The AJYCP Rangajan unit bandh supporters came out on the road on Monday morning and staged a protest by shaving off their heads at Rangajan. AJYCP Paschim Morangi unit also staged a protest by blocking the NH-39 in Telgaram. They also burnt tyres and effigies during the day.
