SILCHAR: Authorities of the NIT Silchar announced the suspension of five of their final semester engineering students for beating up a junior. Six more students have been rusticated from the hostel while nine others were given warnings for their involvement in the incident.
These decisions were taken after an internal investigation, followed by multiple meetings with faculties and other stakeholders mentioned KL Baishnab, the registrar of NIT Silchar. The incident in question took place on March 31, when a fourth-semester student named Siddhant Paitya and his classmates were beaten up by a group of seniors inside the college campus following a verbal exchange.
Siddhant Paitya was rushed to the Silchar Medical College and Hospital immediately and an FIR regarding the incident was lodged at the Ghungoor Police Outpost. A case was registered regarding the same under several sections of the Indian Penal Code and an investigation was started and the Superintendant of Police Numal Mahatta interacted with the victim as well as the college authorities.
"Academic suspension for the current semester has been imposed on Sparsh Munakhia, Mehul Dewangan, Prafful Chauhan, Yogesh Kakodia and Vishwajeet Niranjan Kant. They are debarred from the hostel for that period and a warning letter to be issued," mentioned the Dean of the Students Welfare Department.
Students Abhijit Kalita, Biki Das, Sourav Jyoti Deka, Rishav Anand and Subham Srivastava were debarred from the hostel for the current semester with immediate effect and a warning letter to be issued.
Warning letters have also been issued against Naman Tyagi, Satyabrata Borah, Dhritman Das, Subradeep Gogo, Yash Tripathy, Vivek Singh, Prateek Vij, Susmit Gupta and Arunangshu Roy. Another student named Robin Paul has been debarred from the hostel for one month with immediate effect and a warning letter has been issued.
Additionally, all the above-mentioned students were debarred from T&P coordinator positions, Gymkhana membership, and all other management roles in institutional activities during their remaining period of stay at NIT Silchar.
The order also mentioned, "As per the warning letter all the above students are required to submit an undertaking that they will not involve themselves in any indisciplinary activities during their remaining period of stay at NIT Silchar on a non-judicial stamp paper of Rs.100/- in presence of a Notary Public within 15 days of publication of this notification. Otherwise, appropriate disciplinary action(s) including expulsion from the Institute may be imposed."
