The 50th Freshers’ Social of the Lakhimpur Commerce College was celebrated on Saturday with calls to newcomers to foray into the world of multi-disciplinary education incorporated in the New Education Policy.

LAKHIMPUR: The 50th Freshers’ Social of the Lakhimpur Commerce College was celebrated on Saturday with calls to newcomers to foray into the world of multi-disciplinary education incorporated in the New Education Policy. This year’s fresher’s social coincided with the golden jubilee celebration of the college.

The celebration of the event began in the morning with the hoisting of the flag by Mohit Tapariya, president of the students’ union of the college. This was followed by swahid tarpan by Professor Gopal Kumar Chetry, the Vice Principal of the college. An open chat between the fresher and sophomore students was organized on that occasion. It was coordinated by Dr Arupa Dutta, Professor Mridushmita Hazarika, librarian Runjun Baruah and the representatives of the students' union of the college.

The open session, organized on that occasion, was inaugurated by Dr Muhidhar Pujari, president of the governing body of the college. The session was chaired by Principal Dr Lohit Hazarika. Dr Kushumendra Bhuyan, retired Head of the Department of Political Science of Lakhimpur Girls’ College, attended the open session as the chief guest. In his speech, Dr Bhuyan expressed his optimism of the heralding of a new dawn by the induction of the fresher students to the college. He said that the golden jubilee edition of a fresher’s social of a college was a historical event and everyone should be proud of it.

In his president’s speech, Principal Dr Lohit Hazarika reiterated the commitment of the college in ensuring best of the education envisioned in the New Education Policy to make every student competent and self-dependent. He also highlighted the multi-disciplinary curricula being introduced by the college as per the syllabus of Dibrugarh University for the four-year undergraduate programme.

Various cultural programmes were organized on that occasion in which students from the college performed dances, songs and other activities. In the afternoon, popular vocalist Kusum Kailas participated in the cultural function.
