DHUBRI: The 52nd Ashokaustami Mela got underway with inauguration of it by Dhubri Additional Deputy Commissioner, Nitya Binod Wari at the Dhubri Mela field on Friday evening.

The programme was anchored by Dhubri Mela Committee administrative secretary, Ganesh Sen while a host of office bearers attended the inaugural programme. Speaking as the chief guest, Dhubri Additional Deputy Commissioner, Nitya Binod Wari spoke at length on the significance of Ashokaustami Mela which has been held here for over half-a-century now her on the bank of the mighty Brahmaputra.

Wari hoped that people of not only of this town but other parts of the district and also from adjacent districts would come and enjoy the festivity with a spirit of brotherhood and sanctity.

"This is a big fair which will continue for 15 days, and for free and fair conduct of the mela, the district administration has made elaborate arrangements for security and other amenities. But still if any other assistance is required, the Dhubri Mela Committee can approach the district administration," Wari added.

The inaugural meeting was also addressed by chairman of Dhubri Municipal Board, Dr. Debamoy Sanyal, vice-president of Dhubri Mela Committee, Amal Chandra Saha and others. Many social workers and cultural activists were felicitated in the meeting.

Thousands of devotees from various parts of lower Assam districts have already arrived in Dhubri and are taking shelter in Dhubri Hari Sabha, Kalibari, Sri Sri Jogomaya Mandir, Shivam Dharmasala and other places of Dhubri town, and they will take a holy dip in the Brahmaputra tomorrow on the day of Ashokaustami.
