LAKHIMPUR: The 574th Abirbhav Tithi of Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev, the founder of the Assamese culture and nationality, was celebrated in the namghars and xatras of the Lakhimpur district in a spiritual environment on Wednesday.

On the day, people across the district paid rich tribute with deep obeisance to the divine personality who, with his liberal ideology, spearheaded the Bhakti movement in medieval Assam to bring in a new order in the spiritual and social life of the people. On this occasion, the namghars and xatras across the district became sonorous with the chanting of Guru Vandana along with the presentation of Borgeet and recitation of Gunamala, Kirtan, Bhatimas, Totayas composed by the 'Gurujona'.

In Basudev Than Naruwa Xatra, the famous Baishnav Peeeth of the Northeast region located in Dhakuakhana subdivision, the Abirbhav Tithi-cum-the Janmotsav of the Mahapurush was observed by organizing the traditional Nam-Prasanga like the previous years. The Nam-Prasanga was held under the leadership of Xatria Birendra Dev Goswami in the presence of Xatradhikar Bhupendra Dev Goswami and Deka-Xayradhikar Bhogendra Dev Goswami. The president, secretary and the members of the Xatra Management and Development Committee, hundreds of devotees and disciples of the xatra took part in the programme. The event was also celebrated at the birthplace of Mahapurush Shri Shri Madhavdev, located at Letekupukhuri under Narayanpur area by holding Nam-Prasanga and presentation of Sankardev's cultural creations.

On the other hand, various cultural, religious and institutions, community organizations of the district have been celebrating the 574th Janmotsav of Shrimanta Sankardev with extensive programmes for two days or more than two days. Madhya Telahi Anchalik Sankari Kala-Krusti Bikash Kendra has been celebrating the event with 5-day long colourful programmes since October 2. The agenda of the programmes kick-started on October 2 with the Bisoy-Bachani Sabha of the institution. On the second day on Monday, Usha-Kiratan was conducted in the early morning. Then the main agenda of the event began with the unfurling of the Dharmadhwajja by working president Manik Borah. Then Bhagawat Bhraman, Nam-Prasanga and recitation of Kirtan were held. It was followed by a cultural competition among the students on Borgeet, Lokgeet and Dashavatar Nritya under the management of cultural secretary Dwijen Borah.

On Tuesday, a series of traditional sports competitions, Nam-Prasanga and Diha-Nam competition among female devotees were held. In the evening, Diha-Nam was performed by the youths of the Madhya Telahi region. On Wednesday, a series of literary competitions on the life and works of Mahapurush Sankardev was held under the management of the literary sub-committee. It was followed by a felicitation programme to felicitate the senior citizens of the area. Then the Dharmalosana Sabha was held on the 'Influence of Neo-Vaishnavite Religion upon the new generation'. The programme was chaired by Xatradhikar Moni Goswami and inaugurated by retired subject teacher Thagiram Bhuyan. Retired teacher Gangaram Borah took part in the programme as chief resource person. A galaxy of prominent persons took part in the programme as co-resource persons.

At night, 'Drona Parva, Abhimanyu Bodh' bhaona was staged by the youths of the area. On the concluding day of the event on Thursday, the senior citizens of the area will stage a bhaona named 'Markandeyar Punar Janam'.

On the other hand, the two-day long celebration of Shrimanta Sankardev Janmotsav by Uttar Lakhimpur Nagar Pachimanchal Srimanta Sankardev Janmotsav Udjapan Samiti began at Chandmari Bor-namghar of North Lakhimpur town with the unfurling of the 'Dharma-Dhwaja' of the celebration committee along with the flags of six namghars under the committee. It was followed by smriti tarpan, felicitation of senior citizens, Nam-Prasanga, recitation of Guru-Charit, Bhagawat-Bhraman, literary and cultural competitions. On Thursday, Diha-Nam competition will be held among women's cultural groups after the Nam-Prasanga to be held in the morning. It will be followed by the Dharmalosana Sabha which will be chaired by the president of the celebration committee. Deka-Xatradhikar of the Shri Shri Auniatiya Xatra, Debananda Dev Goswami will grace the occasion as the guest of honour. Baikuntha Borah of Narayanpur will take part in the event as speaker. The Dharmalosana Sabha will be inaugurated by Susen Borah, the former president of the celebration committee. At night, the teenagers of the area will stage a bhaona named 'Bipra Damodarar Akhyan Aru Dantabakrar Muktilabh'.
