LAKHIMPUR: The 65th celebration of Rongali Bihu by Lakhimpur Kendriya Rongali Bihu Sanmilan kicked off in a festive environment at North Lakhimpur Boys’ Government HS School playground on Sunday.

The agenda of the event began with the unfurling of Kendriya Rongali Bihu Sanmilan flag by president Uday Sankar Hazarika, and Bihu flag by organizing committee working president Dr Bhupen Saikia. The smriti tarpan programme was conducted by chief coordinator Jadumoni Baruah. It was followed by the inauguration of the main gate of the Bihutoli which was ceremonially conducted by Nibenita Dutta, the chairperson of the North Lakhimpur Municipal Board. Warm felicitation was accorded to senior citizens and prominent figures of the district. It was followed by the traditional egg-cracking programme. On the other hand, Rongali Haat was inaugurated by Geetanjali Gogoi Pandit.

A colourful procession was taken out covering the North Lakhimpur town. The procession was flagged off by Lakhimpur MLA Manab Deka. Principal of North Lakhimpur College (Autonomous), Dr Biman Chandra Chetia attended the programme as invited guest. Over 50 cultural groups representing almost all the tribes and communities of Assam showcased their native culture during the procession The cultural procession enthralled the onlookers.

In the evening, Moina Bihuwoti competition was held. It was inaugurated by Dipali Hazararika, the Principal-in charge of North Lakhimpur Boys’ Government HS School. It was followed by a cultural programme in which the local artistes presented various cultural items. The cultural programme was inaugurated by vocal artiste Nayani Mahanta.

On Monday, quiz, story telling, traditional sports, Bihu delicacy making competitions will be held. It will be followed by Saru Bihuwoti competition and State-level Bor Bihuwoti competition. On the other hand, poem recitation, debate, Diha Nam, nuptial song recitation, Toka Bihu, State-level Husari competitions will be held on Tuesday.
