66,000 people affected in Biswanath district due to unchanged flood situations

Biswanath Chariali: Flood situation in Biswanath district, consisting of Biswanath Sadar and Gohpur subdivisions, remained same for the fifth consecutive day. Around 66,494 people under 121 revenue villages in Biswanath district have been affected by flood till filing of this report following incessant rains in the northern part of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.

According to official sources, 10 in Biswanath revenue circle, 66 in Gohpur revenue circle, seven in Naduar revenue circle and 52 villages in Halem revenue circle have been inundated by the surging water of the River Brahmaputra. Around 2,290 hectares of cropland have been submerged and paddy seedlings have been washed away while around 47,127 big and 14,099 small animals and 33,592 poultry were also affected by flood.

Personnel of NDRF 12th battalion and SDRP were deployed in the affected areas under the supervision of Biswanath district administration and Gohpur subdivisional administration and they managed to rescue more than 300 people from the submerged areas. Two designated relief camps were opened at Dathkala market shade under Halem revenue circle where around 229 inmates were provided shelter. Two other designated relief camps were opened in Gosainchapari ME School and Kathpura LP School under Naduar revenue circle.

Food, drinking water and other relief materials have also been supplied to the affected people through nine relief distribution centres in the district. The Veterinary Department was kept on high alert for the security and safety of the cattle and poultry in the flood-affected areas while the health department was instructed to carry out health check-up in the relief camp. Eleven medical teams in Biswanath revenue circle and 10 medical teams in Halem revenue circle area were also deployed.

On the other hand, two persons - one at Golsepa and another at Buroi under Halem revenue circle - have been reportedly missing since Tuesday evening. The NDRF and SDRF personnel are conducting search operations in the adjoining areas.
