GUWAHATI: Amid heavy rain along with storm in the northeastern state of Assam, several unfortunate incidents have been reported including loss of lives and properties in recent days.

Notably, 7 people were killed in different districts of Assam after heavy rain accompanying a severe storm lashed out at the regions.

In one of the incidents, 4 women died on the spot after an uprooted bamboo tree suddenly fell on them following the severe storm. The incident took place in the Tingkhang town which is in the Dibrugarh district of Assam.

According to reports, the four women working at a cemetery were taking shelter below the bamboo tree which uprooted at that time.

In another incident in Jagun in the Tinsukia district of Assam, two people were killed after a tree fell on a motorcycle rider who was riding with his friend.

As per sources, one person died on spot and the other succumbed to his injuries on the way to the nearby hospital.

One more person died in the Jania area of the Barpeta district after a tree fell on his house and it collapsed.

Apart from these one person got severely injured in the Dibrugarh and there are more damages reported from other parts of both Tinsukia and Dibrugarh district of Assam.

According to the IMD (Indian Meteorological Department), heavy rainfall accompanying thunderstorms continued over the regions of Meghalaya and Assam with 190 mm rainfall in Assam's Haflong and 20 mm rainfall in Meghalaya's Cherapunji.

The weather department further informed that rainfall with storms also continued in isolated regions of other Indian states including Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Arunachal Pradesh, Karaikal, Jammu & Kashmir, Odisha, Nagaland, Manipur, Tripura and Mizoram.

The IMD stated that heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over the isolated regions of Assam- Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh and isolated heavy rainfall is predicted over Manipur and Nagaland on Saturday 17 April.
