GUWAHATI: A BJP member was detained on Thursday in the Hailakandi district of southern Assam for allegedly defrauding individuals under the pretense of offering them government jobs.
Ansarul Hoque Choudhary, an executive member of the Assam BJP Minority Morcha, has been identified as the individual who was arrested. He is a native of the Hailakandi district's Nizvernerpur under the Lala police station.
According to sources, Dilwar Hussain Barbhuiya, a resident of Katlicherra police station's (Hailakandi district's) Dhalai Malai hamlet, filed a FIR at the station against Ansarul.
According to the complainant, Choudhary boasted of having "good connections" with prominent members of the governing BJP and ministers. He also allegedly demanded payment from the complainant under the guise of getting him a position in government.
Choudhary is accused of taking Rs 5 lakh from Dilwar over several months while promising a job in exchange. Dilwar eventually felt compelled to file a FIR in the case after receiving varied justifications each time he asked the accused for money.
According to a representative of the Katlicherra police station, a case under sections 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property), 406 (criminal breach of trust), and 468 (forgery for purpose of cheating) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been registered, and a police investigation has been started.
Ansarul Hoque Choudhary, according to police sources, was taken to Katlicherra police station for questioning on Thursday morning after being picked up from his home in Nizvernerpur, around 20 km from Hailakandi.
As soon as news of the arrest spread, a large crowd of individuals arrived at the police station, where they also claimed that Ansarul had defrauded them of money by making false promises to secure their positions in the administration.
They claim that Ansarul tried to give them the idea that he knew them well and could get them government positions by showing them images of himself with numerous prominent BJP figures, including chief minister Himanta Biswa. They claim he stole money worth lakhs of rupees from them and never gave it back.
Till this news article was published, the Assam BJP has not released any formal statements. When approached, the general secretary of the Hailakandi district BJP stated that formal statements are at the discretion of the state leadership.
They trust the legal system, he continued, and they are hopeful that it will handle this situation appropriately.
