A Tribute to Bishnu Prasad Bhuyan

Born on August 6, 1947, a week before our nation proclaimed Independence, in a small hamlet called Dorongial Gaon in Barapujia of Nagaon district in Assam, Bishnu Prasad Bhuyan was a man of few words which had the depth and range of a meaningful conversation. He served as an Assam State Government servant from June 15, 1973 to December 31, 2004 till he superannuated at the age of 58 years. In a career spanning over three decades, he served in almost all parts of Assam as an official of Ground Water Division of Directorate of Geology & Mining. During his tour of duty, besides excelling in his professional work, he carved a niche for himself as a man with a heart of gold who earned everlasting friendships, strong bonding and lifelong relations.

Living his life with absolute honour, dignity and complete honesty, he played the role of a friend, philosopher and guide to all, alike. He was a selfless man who was widely respected by one and all for his calm, softspoken, dignified and conscientious nature. A reputation with which he finally left for heavenly abode too.

Besides being a government servant, he was a visionary who professed the noble thought of education of girl child in the 1980s itself, which speaks volumes about his philanthropic thought process which was much ahead of times. He dedicated his life to social work, the most noteworthy among which was the establishment of Rukminigaon Balika Vidyalaya High School in the year 1986. He was also actively involved in working towards the welfare of senior citizens and played a worthwhile role in the Rukminigaon Senior Citizens’ Sanmilon.

He breathed his last in the wee hours of September 23, 2023 at Bhubaneshwar after visiting the famous Shri Jagannath Temple at Puri on a pilgrimage to pay homage to his deceased parents and to pray for them. The fact that he lost his life during a pilgrimage to a holy shrine for such a noble cause speaks volumes about the purity of his soul.

Today when I sit down to pen these few lines on my beloved father, it is with a heavy heart that I pray for the eternal peace of the deeply respected soul. As a family, we have lost a loving husband, a caring father and a much-adored grandfather; a loss which to say the least is irreparable. But somewhere in the depth of my conscience, I know for sure that God Almighty has taken him to a place which is holy and pious, from where he can keep seeing us all.

Om Shanti

– Colonel Shyamnandan Bhuyan
