Nilambar Bora, a noted sportsman, advocate, social worker of Tezpur died on March 17, 2022 due to old age ailment. Nilambor Bora was born on January 3, 1934 at Neez Holeswar Gaon near Tezpur and had his early education at Holeswar, and thereafter he joined the Tezpur Government Boys High School.

In 1951, he passed his matriculation and took admission in Darrang College. In 1956, he graduated from Arts Stream under the Gauhati University. In 1957 he joined Banaras Hindu University and passed MA in History in the year 1959.

He returned to Tezpur and joined at Ghuramari High School as a teacher. However, later he took admission in University Law College, Guwahati in the year 1961 and obtained the degree of LLB in the year 1963.

On March 1, 1964, he joined the Tezpur Bar as an advocate and extended his legal service to the litigants with all honesty, sincerity and dedication. He completed 58 years of continuous practice for which he was felicitated by the Tezpur Bar Association.

As a sportsman he was a jewel of Banaras Hindu University and was a regular football player of the said university from the year 1957-1959 and he represented Banaras Hindu University in All India University Football Tournament and brought trophies in several matches. In the year 1963, under his dynamic leadership a night school was established at Tezpur and he served the school in them evening shift as a teacher without any remuneration. In 1967, he contested election for Tezpur Assembly Seat as an independent candidate but lost.

However, in 1972, he was elected from Ghuramari Gaon Panchayat to Tezpur Mahkuma Parishad. He was actively connected with Refinery Movement, Medium Agitation, Food Agitation along with AASU. During, Assam Agitation he was booked under Preventive Detention.

However, the Gauhati High Court set aside the detention order. He was one of the Pioneer Advocate who extended legal aid to the members of the agitation who were detained under Criminal Law. During emergency also he was vocal and mobilized public opinion against emergency. He was a nationalist in spirit from his school days and was a fearless fighter for the interest of Assam and its people.

His sudden demise has cast a pall of gloom among the legal fraternity. He was a perfect gentleman with a golden heart. His death was condoled by Tezpur Bar and the judicial function remained suspended as an honour to his departed soul. He was 88 years old and was survived by his wife, two daughters and a son.

Today, on the occasion of his Adya Shraddha, I pay my homage to his departed soul and pray for the peaceful rest of his soul.
