Tamulpur: A carcass of a wild elephant was recovered on Thursday morning at Dawraijhar village near Bogamati picnic spot along Indo-Bhutan border under Tamulpur forest range in Baksa district. In search of food, a herd of wild elephants have been moving from village to village along Indo-Bhutan border since last few years. According to the report, on Wednesday night, a herd of wild elephants entered in Dawrijhar village in search of food and on Thursday morning local people found one wild elephant lying dead on a canal.

Getting the information, in charge of Suwagpur police outpost Rajen Boro with a police team arrived at the spot. However, till the filing of this report the actual cause of death of the wild elephant was not ascertained. After the postmortem, the elephant was buried. The atrocity of wild elephant has been marked as a burning problem in Tamulpur sub division as well as in Baksa district. More than 90 people have been killed by wild elephants and 11 wild elephants died due to human-elephant conflict only in Tamulpur sub division in last 15 years.

Local people have been demanding to take scientific measures to control the wild elephant and to protect the lives and properties of the local people as well as the lives of the elephants. Kumarikata Forest Range and Tamulpur Forest Range arranged an awareness meeting at Guwabari in the premises of Gopinath Bardoloi High School on Thursday evening. The meeting was presided over by Karna Bimoli and was conducted by Madhab Chetry where DFO Bhabesh Das joined the meeting as chief guest. Addressing the public, Bhabesh Das advised the people about the measures to be taken to tackle the wild elephants when they enter the village. The people also demanded to set up a camp with expert foresters who can help them.
