LAKHIMPUR: The Lakhimpur and Dhemaji district units of All Assam Students' Union (AASU) bunt the effigy of Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Tuesday evening across Lakhimpur and Dhemaji for arresting almost 200 protesters who had blocked the vehicle carrying construction materials of Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project (SLHP) to Gerukamukh by NHPC.

Notably, the activists of AASU, AJYCP, TMPK, Tai Ahom Yuva Parishad and many other anti-big dam activist organizations had blocked the vehicle at Gogamukh near railway line from 12 pm till 7.15pm on Tuesday, though the same vehicle passed through Lakhimpur on Monday escorted by police. The police arrested the protesters for violating the curfew which has been enforced to contain the spread of COVID-19 pandemic.

By staging the protest, AASU vehemently condemned the Chief Minister and the police department for arresting the peaceful protesters. All the regional committees under Dhemaji district AASU initiated the protest programme while Lakhimpur AASU staged the same at Sahid Bedi premises in North Lakhimpur town.

Dhemaji AASU general secretary Kalyan Gogoi, state executive Gopal Das, Dhemaji TMPK president Harichandra Kaman, Dhemaji AJYCP secretary-in-charge Ranjan Borah, Tularam Gogoi, ATASU publicity secretary and many other dignitaries of the organizations were shifted to Gogamukh Police Station after being arrested.
