LAKHIMPUR: The activists of the Lakhimpur district unit of All Assam Students' Union (AASU) once again took to the streets with massive protest programme against the ongoing road construction by the neighbouring State of Arunachal Pradesh encroaching upon the land of Assam belonging to the Ranga Reserve Forest of Lakhimpur district. In this regard, all the regional committees under Lakhimpur district body of AASU on Thursday burnt the effigies of Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Forest Minister Parimal Suklabaidya demanding for their immediate steps to stop the illegal encroachment done by the neighbouring State.

Notably, the neighbouring State has still been continuing the construction of the road encroaching upon the land of Assam belonging to the Ranga Reserve Forest. At present, the neighbouring State has completed the construction of the 5-km stretch of the road through Bell Bosti under the Reserve Forest to connect its two places, namely Gumtu and Kimin.

The North Lakhimpur regional unit of AASU, led by president Pranjit Gogoi and general secretary Punamjyoti Gohain, burnt the effigies of the Chief Minister and the Forest Minister at Main Chariali of North Lakhimpur town. While staging the protest programme, the activists of the organization, by shouting various slogans, slammed the Chief Minister and the Forest Minister for not initiating any move to protect the native land from being encroached by the neighbouring State despite consecutive prayers and petitions. The protesters also flayed the Lakhimpur district administration and Forest Division on account of their failure to check the illegal encroachment. In this regard, the organization demanded disciplinary action against the Lakhimpur DFO alleging his support to the ongoing deforestation committed by the encroachers from across the border. By initiating the agitation, Lakhimpur AASU demanded the State and Union governments to resolve the inter-State border dispute between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh immediately.
