Dibrugarh: On Monday, a protest against the construction of the 2000MW Lower Subansiri hydropower project was staged by the All Assam Students Union in the district of Dibrugarh in Assam.

A rally was carried out by the students' union that started from Old Government Boys High School field. The protesters held out banners and posters demanding the halt of the construction work of the dam.

The leader of AASU Rupjyoti Borthakur said, "We demand halt in construction work of the dam because the expert committee have already told that the big dam is a threat for the people of Lakhimpur and Dhemaji. The BJP government didn't bother to listen to the expert committee and didn't stop of the ongoing construction."

He added, "During Congress rule, the BJP were against the big dam but after coming to power they started the construction work of the big dam."

Along with AASU, other major organisations of the state such as AJYCP and KMSS have reached out to the authorities to demand a stop in the construction work of the dam claiming that the dam will lead to problems that might be disastrous for the people residing in the downstream areas of Assam.

The dam is supposed to provide 533 MW of power to the state after it is commissioned in addition to the 25 MW that will be free of cost.

The mega-dam project of the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) was approved by the central government in 2003 after which the construction was started in 2005.

The project was proposed to be completed by 2014 but its construction was stopped in 2011 after it received opposition from various organisations.
