JORHAT: The All Assam Students' Union (AASU) Jorhat regional unit on Friday staged protest demanding a high-level inquiry into the death of six persons in Jorhat district due to alleged negligence of doctors in the past few days. They submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister requesting him to take necessary steps at the earliest.
The AASU said said six persons, namely Achinta Baishya, Samir Phukan, Gaurav Sahani, Ikbal Ahmed, Meghnad Mahali and Rabat Mal Soni, expired in the past few days due to alleged negligence on the part of doctors. These persons died without required treatment. They also alleged that doctors had refused to provide treatment to these patients citing urgency of COVID-19 duty and some of them refused to provide treatment till they produced COVID negative report.
AASU Jorhat unit president Arjunmoni Bhuyan said, "Six persons have died in Jorhat district without treatment due to negligence of doctors. Almost all the doctors refused to provide treatment to patients citing COVID-19. Some of them asked for COVID-19 negative report as a condition to provide treatment. Patients with serious medical conditions have to knock door-to-door for basic treatment."
AASU Jorhat unit general secretary Partha Pratim Borah added, "We have sent memorandum to the Chief Minister with our six-point charter of demands, including to open separate wards for COVID-19 and other patients, to provide treatment to the emergency patients without COVID-19 test report, to install separate ICU and ventilation for other patients, to provide Rapid Antigen Test facility in all hospitals and to ensure treatment for senior persons and children." In a joint statement they also demanded a high-level inquiry into the death of six persons and punishment to the guilty. Activists of AASU East Jorhat, West Jorhat, North West Jorhat and Baligaon regional units also joined in the protest and staged dharna in front of Jorhat Deputy Commissioner's office.
