LAKHIMPUR: Alleging massive corruption in the North Lakhimpur Municipal Board (NLMB) and its failure with regard to mitigating several crucial problems in the urban area, the activists of the North Lakhimpur regional unit of All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) initiated agitation programme on Friday.

By expressing their grievance and gheraoing the NLMB office, the protesters of the organization demanded the district administration to evict the illegal markets that have grown on both sides of NH-15, falling under the North Lakhimpur municipal area. Further, the organization demanded to stop the collection of fees for parking vehicles on the NH-15, to construct link roads in the town in order to avoid traffic congestion, to repair the non-functional street lights, to install lids upon the open drains, to supply pure drinking water, to replace the District Transport Office and to install enough garbage bins in the town to manage waste matters. The protesters, led by NL AASU president Pranjit Gogoi and general secretary Punamjyoti Burhagohain, rocked the environment in the North Lakhimpur Municipal Board office campus by shouting various slogans in support of the demands. Lakhimpur AASU general secretary Dhanmoni Dutta also took part in the protest programme. The organization submitted a memorandum to the DC of Lakhimpur regarding the demands.
