Lakhimpur: Though the tensed situation in Lakhimpur district due to the extensive people’s stir against the Citizenship Amendment Act since Monday last is limping back to normal to some extent, agitation programmes against the contentious Act continued in the district without any halt.
Continuing its stir against the Act, the Lakhimpur district unit of All Assam Students’ Union initiated Pada Yatra in Lakhimpur development Block area on Sunday under the aegis of its North Lakhimpur regional unit. Covering almost 20 villages under the block, the organization organized several awareness meetings over the Act by initiating the protest programmes.
In a press release, AAJYCS president Nripen Das and general secretary Nityananda Das stated, “Most of the Bengali speaking people with Bangladesh origin have skilfully attained castes certificates declaring their identity as people belonging to the Namahsudra and Kaibarta community under SC and they are enjoying the privileges under reservation systems by doing jobs as doctors, engineers, professors, etc. The trick hatched by the government to grant citizenship to more such people will hit the interest of the SC community and so we are strongly opposing the Act.”
Several dignitaries of the organization including Lakhimpur district secretary Dhanmoni Dutta and North Lakhimpur regional unit president Pranjit Gogoi came down heavily against the controversial Act.
