LAKHIMPUR: In the wake of the National Green Tribunals’ verdict, sentenced on Wednesday in favour of the Lower Subansiri Hydro Electric Project (LSHEP), set up by NHPC Limited at Gerukamukh in Dhemaj-Arunachal Pradesh border area, strong reaction against the big river dam prevailed in Lakhimpur district on Thursday.

Opposing the alleged ‘forceful’ move on the part of the Union and State governments towards completing the construction of the big river dam, the Lakhimpur district unit of All Assam Students’ Union staged torchlight march in North Lakhimpur town on Thursday evening. Resorting the agitation programme, the organization cleared its stand that it would never approve of the Union and State governments’ move to complete the construction work of the controversial big river dam which was taken by ignoring the sentiments of the people of the State and the report submitted by the experts from Assam.

“We will carry on agitation and legal fight against the LSHEP. The Union and State governments must pay importance to public opinion regarding the issue. The lives and properties of the downstream people must be ensured from the devastation caused by big river dam,” said Lakhimpur AASU president Pulok Jyoti Borah and secretary Dhanmoni Dutta who led the protest programme where the dignitaries of the district and regional committees along with other activists were present. The organization issued warning to the NHPC Limited and vehemently criticized the alleged mute attitude of Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal in this issue.
