LAKHIMPUR: The All Assam Students' Union (AASU) initiated a state-wide protest programme on Thursday against the plan of the State Government to hike property tax and against the spiralling prices of essential commodities.

In this connection, the activists of the Lakhimpur district unit of the organization, led by president Simanta Nath and general secretary Swaraj Sankar Gogoi, took out a protest rally in North Lakhimpur town. Along with other AASU leaders, central committee chief organizing secretary Pulok Bora was present in the protest programme. During the course of the rally, the protesters rent the air by shouting slogans to oppose the State Government's plan to hike property tax and to demand for the control of the sky-rocketing prices of essential commodities at the earliest.

By initiating the protest programme, Lakhimpur AASU slammed the State Government alleging its failure to stop the hike in the prices of essential commodities which has made life miserable for the common people.

"Despite such circumstances, the plan of the government to hike property tax will add insult to the injury of the people of the State, who are already suffering a lot under the burden of price rise," stated Swaraj Sankar Gogoi while interacting with the media persons. Lakhimpur AASU strongly demanded the government to roll-back the alleged anti-people policies or to face intensified agitation.
