LAKHIMPUR: The frequent upward trend in prices of petrol and diesel has strained the household budgets of the common people. On Wednesday, the price of petrol hit the mark of Rs. 108.00 in Lakhimpur district. Increase in fuel prices has had a ripple effect on the prices of essential commodities as well.

Lakhimpur district unit of All Assam Students' Union (AASU) on Wednesday, as per instruction of the central committee of the organization, staged a massive protest programme across the district demanding curb in price hike for petrol, diesel, LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas), essential commodities, medicines and construction materials in the State. Regarding the issue, the district unit of the organization staged sit-in in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office in association with the North Lakhimpur regional committee.

Similarly, all 22 regional committees under the Lakhimpur district unit, including Dhakuakhana, Pachim Machkhowa, Sonari Chapori, Sobansiri, Ghilamora, Chauldhowa, Boginadi, Naoboicha, Laluk, Phulbari, Bihpuriya, Harmoti, Rajgarh, Kherajkhat Border, Narayanpur, Dhalpur regional committees, staged protest at the centre places of their jurisdiction.

The activists of the Telahi-Kamalaboriya regional committees, led by district assistant general secretary Siddhartha Pathak, regional unit president Kula Prashad Gogoi, general secretary-in charge Rakesh Das, staged the protest programme at Panigaon Chariali. During the demonstration across the district, the protesters slammed the government and rocked the environment by shouting slogans to control the price hike in petro-products, medicines, essential commodities and construction materials. AASU State executive member Dhanmoni Dutta, Lakhimpur district president Simanta Nath, general secretary Swaraj Sankar Gogoi flayed the Union and State governments by criticizing them in strong terms regarding the issue.
