AASU stages protest, demands scrapping of EIA

The Lakhimpur district unit of All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) took out a torchlight rally in North Lakhimpur town demanding for the repeal of Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019, scrapping of the draft Environmental Impact Assessment, 2020 (EIA), immediate implementation of the Sixth Clause of the Assam Accord and permanent resolve of the illegal foreigners’ issue.

LAKHIMPUR: The Lakhimpur district unit of All Assam Students' Union (AASU) took out a torchlight rally in North Lakhimpur town demanding for the repeal of Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019, scrapping of the draft Environmental Impact Assessment, 2020 (EIA), immediate implementation of the Sixth Clause of the Assam Accord and permanent resolve of the illegal foreigners' issue.

The North Lakhimpur police detained a number of AASU activists who came to take part in the protest programme. Moreover, police prevented the rally from proceeding and took the torches away from the protesters. Police arrested North Lakhimpur subdivisional unit AASU president Jyotirmoy Hazarika and Dhakuakhana subdivisional unit AASU president Swaraj Sankar Gogoi along with other activists. However, they were later released.
