LAKHIMPUR: The members of All Assam Students' Union (AASU) initiated agitational programme in the Dhemaji district in order to demand probe into the alleged corruption taking place while implementing the Panchayat & Rural Development (P&RD) Department schemes like Prime Minister Awaas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G) and MGNREGA.

In this context the activists of the Dhemaji subdivisional unit of the AASU and people coming from various Gaon Panchayats staged two-hour long sit in on Saturday at Dhemaji town. During the course of the protest programme, the protesters shouted number of slogans to demand to grant PMAY house to genuine beneficiaries, to prioritize BPL families for PMAY house, to stop depriving of the genuine beneficiaries from the scheme benefits, to take legal steps against those who were involved in irregularities in the implementation of the P&RD schemes. In support of their allegations of corruption in the implementation of the PMAY-G, the Dhemaji Subdivisional AASU has cited the names of a number of beneficiaries under various Gaon Panchayats, who has been deprived of the scheme benefits year after year.

"Police has already sent the secretary of the Sripani GP, when the case of siphoning off PMAY fund, which was allotted to one old woman named Sarumai Changmai of Ward No. 2, came into light," Dhemaji Subdivisional AASU president Arabinda Gogoi, general secretary Anirban Saikia alleged in a press statement while accounting some cases corruption in PMAY.

Dhemaji district AASU president Dipak Sarmah, general secretary Kalyan Gogoi, and other leaders took part in the protest. Dhemaji Subdivisional AASU demanded the government to transfer the Dhemaji DRDA Project Director and several BDOs who have been working in the same place of the district for years.
