LAKHIMPUR: "The All Assam Students' Union (AASU) is undoubtedly a non-political organization which has been endeavouring to highlight the crucial problems of the State in order to fulfill the hopes and aspirations of people from every walk of life. The governments at the Centre and in the State, at present, have attempted to push the future of the people of Assam towards a tremendous threat by enforcing the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019. Moreover, these two governments have adopted some policies against the greater interest of the people in most cases. So, AASU has taken a decision to form a new political party in order to fight against these untoward policies of the existing government," said Krishna Das, the finance secretary of AASU, in Lakhimpur. He made this statement while taking part in the open session of the 14th biennial session of Dhakuakhana subdivisional unit of the organization held at the auditorium of Harhi College in association with Pachim Machkhowa regional unit.

"Though the political party will be formed under the auspices of AASU and AJYCP (Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad), there will be no relation with AASU and the political party. AASU will always maintain its non-political character in future. Though most of the senior leaders will leave the organization as it is the need of hour, the organizational base of AASU will not weaken and it will remain strong like before," added Krishna Das.

Notably, the 14th biennial session of the Dhakuakhana subdivisional unit of AASU, which was organized by strictly maintaining the COVID-19 protocol, began on Tuesday with a plantation drive inaugurated by former AASU leader and Dhakuakhana Karmachari Parishad secretary Atul Chutiya. Chief convener of Dhakuakhana subdivisional unit AASU, Dilip Kumar Konwar unfurled the organizational flag. Convener Dipak Dutta administered the swahid tarpan event.

Then the Dhakuakhana subdivisional AASU gave warm felicitation to two noted artistes - Bhigeswar Bhorali and Prabhat Kalita Borgayan - who received the artistes' pension of this year, two noted muga farmers Labheswar Gogoi and Kesharam Dutta and tea planter Apurba Dutta in a special programme held under the management of AASU Lakhimapur district unit assistant general secretary Tultul Bhorali. They were feted with a citation, gamosa and other mementoes.

Then the delegate meeting was held. In the same programme, the 33-member Dhakuakhana subdividisional ASSU committee was constituted with Pallab Baruah as president and Swaraj Sankar Gogoi as general secretary.

On the other hand, in addition to Krishna Das, AASU State executive member Kamala Sarmah, Lakhimpur district unit president Pulokjyoti Borah and general secretary Dhanmoni Dutta delivered speech while taking part in the open session of the event.
