AATSU appeals to CJI to direct Manipur government to take action

KOKRAJHAR: Expressing serious concern over the attack and exploitation of the modesty of tribal women in the north-eastern region, the All-Assam Tribal Students’ Union (AATSU), Assam on Sunday appealed to the Chief Justice of India (CJI) to issue directives to the Manipur government to take action against the perpetrators of violence and attacks on tribal people. The AATSU on Saturday sent a memorandum to the Chief Justice of India to issue orders to the government of Manipur to take stringent action against the perpetrators of violence.

The president of AATSU, Hariswar Brahma and joint secretary Borsing Enghee in the memorandum expressed deep pain over the inhuman gang rape of a woman in front of her 19-year-old brother and the parade of the three naked Kuki tribal women in Manipur on May 4. They said the perpetrators were non-Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) and the law-enforcing agencies remained silent and intentionally failed to take cognizance and register case against the culprits, as a result of which tribal people continued to suffer and were denied justice. They urged the CJI to direct the government of Manipur and Government of India to initiate stringent action against the culprits so that such incidents are not repeated in the future in India.

The AATSU demanded that the victim families must be provided adequate compensation. They also demanded protection of life and properties of the tribal people of Manipur. The AATSU urged the CJI to take cognizance and suo-moto against the perpetrators and award capital punishment in accordance with the law of the land. The tribal student body further demanded that the law-enforcing agencies should be equally held responsible of such heinous crimes.
