ABSU observes 27th death anniversary of Swmbla Basumatary as Anti-Terrorism Day

KOKRAJHAR: As July 30 is observed as ‘Anti-Terrorism Day’ every year commemorating the death of Jwhwlao Swmbla Basumatary, the then president of the All Bodo Students’ Union (ABSU) in 1996, the 27th death anniversary of Jwhwlao Swmbla Basumatary was observed by the ABSU at Jwhwlao Swmbla Bsumatary Park, Goibari near Basugaon in Chirang district on Sunday. Signifying his life and philosophy towards building a healthy, democratic and non-violent society amongst the Bodos and in the entire BTR, state and the nation, Anti-Terrorism Day is organized by ABSU to shun violence and arms culture from the society.

The day-long event began with the hosting of ABSU dlag by Dipen Boro, president of the ABSU, followed by floral tribute to Jwhwlao Swmbla Basumatary at his tomb by his wife Bhanumati Basumatary and release of pigeon and balloons by Hari Narayan Khakhlary, Sahitya Akademi awardee, and Ramela Islary, former vice-president of Bodo Sahitya Sabha (BSS).

A signature campaign was against the terror of drugs and human trafficking initiated by Dr Berlao K. Karzee, Associate Prof. of Kokrajhar Government College, was held followed by blood donation camp. In the blood donation camp, more than 200 donors donated blood.

An open discussion on the topic ‘Life of Jwhwlao Swmbla Basumatary and his indomitable role for Bodo nation building’ was chaired by Dipen Boro, president of ABSU. The open discussion was inaugurated by Rajya Sabha MP Rwn Gwra Narzary. The president of the BSS, Dr Surath Narzary graced the occasion as the chief guest while CEM of BTC, Pramod Boro and Samudra Gupta Kashyap, Assam State Information Commissioner, Assam, attended the open discussion as the special guests along with other dignitaries.

Through this programme, the ABSU reaffirmed towards making the society free from terror of all forms that hampers human life and dignity and called upon all to come together to uphold the peace and communal harmony.

The president of the ABSU, Dipen Boro said Jwhwlao Swmbla Basumatary had been vocal against terrorism and thus, he became a victim of terrorism in 1996. The ABSU conferred the title ‘Jwhwlao’, the Hero on Swmbla Basumatary as he stood against terrorism as an active student leader and dynamic social activist among the Bodos. “TheABSU believes it is the common duty of every individual in the society to oppose violent activities,” he said adding that creating terror in the society and destabilizing peace in the region would not be tolerated. He also said there were different forms of terrorism which must be tackled with iron hands so that peace prevails in the society.
