ABSU stages protest demanding removal of Bodoland University Vice Chancellor

In a continuing revolt, the agitated activists of the All-Bodo Students’ Union (ABSU) on Saturday staged a strong protest against the Vice Chancellor of the Bodoland University (BU) Prof. Laishram Ladu Singh in front of the gate of the varsity demanding immediate removal or suspension of Singh from BU and appointment of new VC at the earliest.

KOKRAJHAR: In a continuing revolt, the agitated activists of the All-Bodo Students’ Union (ABSU) on Saturday staged a strong protest against the Vice Chancellor of the Bodoland University (BU) Prof. Laishram Ladu Singh in front of the gate of the varsity demanding immediate removal or suspension of Singh from BU and appointment of new VC at the earliest.

The president of ABSU Dipen Boro, vice president Kwrwmdao Wary, general secretary Khanindra Basumatary and leaders from district committees joined the protest demonstration. They shouted slogans like, ‘VC Hatao-BU Bachao’, ‘Ladu Singh-Go back’ etc. The police team tried to prevent the ABSU activists but agitated student members moved forward to vent their ire against the corrupt university administrator.

The ABSU submitted a memorandum to the Minister of Education, Assam Dr. Ranoj Pegu through District Commissioner, Kokrajhar demanding immediate removal/suspension of VC Prof. Laishram Ladu Singh from BU and immediate appointment of in-charge VC of Bodoland University.

The president of the ABSU Dipen Boro said Singh being accused and arrested person on charges of corruption by the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption and CM’s Vigilance Cell vide case no.-01/2022 U/S-120B/420/409 IPC R/W Sec. 13 (a) 13(2) of PC Act, 1988 should step down on moral ground. He said the ABSU will never allow to run the prestigious higher educational institution by corrupt administrator and will not allow to play with the future of students. He said, “This is very clear from the letter issued by the Chief Secretary of Assam to the Higher Education department which is apparent and a very serious case.” He demanded that the department of Education must take action against such delinquent serving official who is already accused and arrested. He further said this was very clearly stated that the systematic changes and transparency to ensure prevention of corrupt practices in their offices must be conducted.

Sources from the BU said a team of Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption and Special Vigilance Cell of Chief Minister had come to the university and took away nine official files for investigation. Sources said the official files taken by investigating team was related to the construction works that included market shed, drains, gardening and others which are not visible in the university but funds were released.

A higher officer of the BU said the VC of Bodoland University Prof. Laishram Ladu Singh on July 20 morning came to his office chamber at around 7 am and took away the files of construction works. He also said the files relating to appointment of a financial officer and minutes of academic council meeting were also taken away by him for the purpose only known to him.

Meanwhile, the ABSU, Kokrajhar district committee staged a protest demonstration in front of the Bodoland University on July 20 demanding immediate removal of VC Prof. Laishram Ladu Singh and appointment of new VC. The ABSU activists, later locked the official chamber of VC Singh.

The BU affairs become a matter of shame and has proved that massive irregularities are going on in the varsity which is the only premier higher educational institution of Bodoland region.
