SILCHAR: Amidst protests by student bodies with affiliation to opposition political parties for deferment of examinations for NEET and JEE candidates in view of the raging pandemic COVID-19 pandemic, Union Ministry of Education is all set to hold them from Tuesday, adhering to the directive of the Supreme Court and the University Grants Commission (UGC). Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishanka has gone on record to say students wanted the National Eligibility and Entrance Test and the Joint Entrance Examinations to be held as over 17 lakh candidates had downloaded the admit cards in 24 hours issued by the National Testing Agency.
There has been growing demand from students also not to further postpone the examinations after being deferred from April, May and June and now September. Further postponement will have cascading effect on the academic career of students. UGC has said without examinations, admission to next higher stage cannot be considered. Besides, the issue of health hazards of candidates has also been seriously addressed to by the authorities concerned. The examination dates have been fixed from September 1 to September 6.
ABVP has also taken into consideration the issue of transportation for the candidates of the three districts of Cachar, Karimganj and Hailakandi. In a memorandum addressed to the Chief Minister of Assam submitted through the Deputy Commissioner of Cachar today, ABVP Cachar unit has demanded arrangement of transportation for the candidates from urban and rural areas to the examination centres as done by other states. For safety of candidates, examination centres have to be properly sanitised. The memorandum was signed by Kaveri Nag, Kishloy Chakraborty and Shivam Boruya, frontline workers of ABVP.
