Academic courses at AIIMS Changsari to begin from November: Himanta Biswa Sarma

Guwahati: Himants Biswa Sarma, the Assam minister who holds the health, education, and finance portfolios, today announced that the academic courses at the under-construction All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Changsari will begin from November 1 this year.

However, treatment at the top-tier facility will commence from next year onwards, Sarma said.

Sarma made this announcement at a function held in Guwahati Medical College Auditorium (GMCH) for distribution of appointment letters to 201 staff nurses of Lakhimpur Medical College and Hospital (LMCH) and 157 doctors for rural service.

The Minister also expressed that the state government resolves to build two new government hospitals each year. He also said that the efforts of the health department have pushed up the number of medical seats in the state up to 1,000.

Himanta Biswa Sarma said that this year, the Government has completed two medical colleges at Lakhimpur and Diphu. He said that they are completing two other medical colleges next year at Dhubri and Nagaon. On the other hand, 70 percent works of Nalbari Medical College and 60 percent works of Tinsukia Medical College have already been done, Sarma said, adding that several colleges shall be set up in the state within the next few years.

Sarma also stated the Assam government will set up four new medical colleges at Biswanath, Charaideo, Goalapara, and Karimganj. The government is also planning to establish another medical college in Guwahati.
