Assam: AIDUF Files Petition in Supreme Court to Stop Delimitation

Guwahati: According to AIUDF MLA Karim Uddin Barbhuiya, the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) has petitioned the Supreme Court to block the planned delimitation plan for their seat.

Eleven other political groups have also been to Delhi to discuss the matter, in addition to the Congress party, according to Barbhuiya.

Assam Pradesh Congress Committee, Raijor Dal, Assam Jatiya Parishad, Jatiya Dal, Assam Trinamool Congress, Nationalist Congress Party, Communist Party of India, Communist Party of India (Marxist), Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) Liberation, Rashtriya Janata Dal, and Janata Dal (United) all jointly submitted the memorandum.

The visiting groups were criticised by Barbhuiya for abusing the opulent lodgings at five-star hotels. He further claimed that they were only in Delhi as part of a political charade.

In a tweet about the meeting, Mallikarjun Kharge stated that the 11 opposition parties' joint objection to the Assam delimitation exercise would be submitted to the ECI, followed by a demonstration at Jantar Mantar in Delhi on Friday.

Taking on Twitter Barbhuiya wrote, “A case has been filed by AIUDF in Supreme Court to stop the delimitation process. Filing of Case No. SCIN01-00317-2023, signed by Suzam Uddin Laskar, MLA & Vice President AIUDF Central Committee, on behalf of the party.”

On the other hand, the president of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) of the state unit, Ripun Bora, referred to the process as a "ultimate disrespect" to fairness and impartiality after the Election Commission of India (ECI) released the draught plan for the delimitation exercise in Assam.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has published a draught proposal in June for the redrawing of Assam's Assembly and Parliamentary Constituencies. This is an important development in the process of changing the state's political system. This revision is a long-awaited event for Assam as the last delimitation operation was in 1976, more than 40 years ago.
