DOOMDOOMA: Along with the rest of the country, the tea estate labourers of Doomdooma area too responded whole-heartedly to the Prime Minister’s call to observe Janata Curfew on Sunday for prevention of coronavirus by confining themselves inside their residential quarters.

This underscores the tea labourers’ awareness about the menace of this dreaded virus playing havoc all over the world, said Asam Chah Mazdoor Sangha (ACMS) general secretary Rupesh Goala in a statement to the media. At the same time, he raised the demand that the State Government should take steps for closure of the tea gardens up to March 29 as preventive measure. He further said that this leave of the workers should be treated as leave with wages.

For instance, he pointed out that already Rongajan TE under the management of Kaziranga University in Golaghat district, where more than 1,000 workers work, had taken this step. Goala further said that in the meanwhile, children of tea labourers who work outside the State have returned home after the spread of coronavirus. So he demanded that strict surveillance measures should be taken for them and ACMS should be provided with the required data with regard to their current whereabouts and under no circumstances the data of those people should be concealed from ACMS.
