TINSUKIA: Prof R George Michael, founder head of the Department of Zoology and acting Vice-Chancellor of NEHU Shillong, passed away at Madurai, Tamil Nadu on Sunday due to old-age ailment. He was 87.
An outstanding teacher and researcher in Ecology and Fresh Water Biology and highly revered among the students, Prof Michael laid the foundation of hydro biological research in Northeast India way back in 1974. He was very supportive to students and endowed with charming personality. A soft spoken and ever smiling Prof Michael guided innumerable Ph.D scholars and published papers of international repute. He was not only instrumental in shaping the department with latest technologies but also in exposition of departmental students to the global arena, many of whom are well established in India and abroad.
The NEHU Alumni Association of Zoology along with its Mizoram chapter have deeply condoled the death of Prof Michael. He leaves behind his wife Dr Prema Michael, also a fresh water biologist, and two sons.
