GUWAHATI: At a time when the basic necessities of life have become a challenge due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, a major respite has reached the people of Assam as the state government is likely to announce more relaxations concerning the COVID-19 restrictions following August 15. This was hinted by Assam Health Minister Keshab Mahanta.

The state Health Minister further said that the state government is closely monitoring the pandemic situation which is now reflecting considerable improvements.

Assam Health Minister, Keshab Mahanta added, "We have already announced some relaxation. We are considering announcing more relaxation as the situation has been improving. Currently, only districts, Golaghat and Lakhimpur are under some strict restrictions like curfew," he added.

Mahanta further added that "The government is deeply concerned with the plight of the common people caused by the restrictions imposed to tackle better the ongoing pandemic."

However, he abstained from making comments whether the restrictions upon the inter-district movement will be lifted or not. "We are also giving prime importance upon re-opening of the educational institutions. Students are also suffering. People are facing hardships. But ultimate decision will be taken by Hon'ble Chief Minister. Our Health department will co-operate with him.''

The Health Minister further informed that a new set of COVID-19 Standard Operating Protocols(SOP) will be published in the next week.

Meanwhile, Mahanta expressed apprehension that the total lifting of the restrictions may increase the infection. "We may announce some restrictions before August 15,'' he further said.
