LAKHIMPUR: All India Democratic Students' Organisation (AIDSO) has expressed deep grief over the death of 26 students of Yaripok Thambalanu Higher Secondary School in a tragic road accident in East Imphal district of Manipur on December 21.
In a press statement sent to The Sentinel, AIDSO general secretary Sourav Ghosh said, "26 students of Yaripok Thambalanu Higher Secondary School of East Imphal district lost their lives in a fatal road accident at Bishnupur Khupum near Longsai Tubung village of Noney district on Wednesday. So far 26 students have been reported dead and 14 seriously injured are in hospital. The government and the education department should be careful enough so that such sad incidents do not happen in the future. Like the rest of the country, if the government does not take effective measures to improve the road and transport system for the commuting of the common people, including students, in the states of North East India, such tragic incidents will be repeated again and again. Life and property of common people including students will continue to be lost. If students are to be taken somewhere for an educational trip or for any other purpose, it is necessary to be very careful keeping in mind the natural environment and road conditions."
AIDSO expressed their deepest condolences to the bereaved family members of the deceased students. The organization also demanded adequate financial compensation to the families of the deceased along with free and advanced medical facilities for the injured under government responsibility at the earliest.
