Joysagar: Air and water pollution have become a major concern in Sivasagar town in recent times. The main source of air pollution in the river banks are the sand mahals that are the property of the Sivasagar Divisional Forest Department and are also under the legal jurisdiction of the Sivasagar Municipal Board.

The Sivasagar Forest Division has allotted many sand and soil ghats to some selected contractors of the town and following this, the contractors are collecting sand and soil from the Dikhow, Desang and the Dehing river ghats of Sivasagar. Trucks and dumpers carrying sand and soil create pollution in the town and also in the water.

Besides, due to ongoing construction work of many urban roads under the Sivasagar Municipal Board, the areas have become polluted. But the SMB authorities appear to be helpless in checking the air and water pollution. The contractors seem to be flouting all rules related to sand and soil digging and transportation of the sand and soil. Citizens have expressed concern over the health hazards due to pollution and have flayed the SMB authorities for failing to check this problem.
