GUWAHATI:

Kanwaldeep Singh Sindhu, one of the key suspects in the kidnapping of a businessman called Atul Das, succumbed to death after being grievously injured in police retaliatory firing.

He was arrested in Karbi Anglong by the Assam Police on Friday.

Sidhu was an ex-inspector in the Railways Protection Special Force who was suspended with 2013 after being linked to a series of criminal activities. It should be noted that Sidhu was involved in illicit guns smuggling from Nagaland to other Indian states.

According to GP Singh, Special DGP of the Assam Police, while traveling in police custody, the prime accused snatched a police weapon and fired. The police then fired in retaliation due to which the prime accused was grievously injured and was taken to the hospital.

Only a few days earlier, Fancy Bazar Outpost Constable Raj Babu Singh, who had been detained in connection with the kidnapping of businessman Ajit Das, was shot at after attempting to flee police custody.

The event occurred when police transported Singh to Gheguwa Hill in Morigaon district for a follow-up inquiry into the kidnapping case.

Assam DGP (Director General of Police) GP Singh stated on Tuesday morning that the accused attempted to flee from police custody and that the police had to use 'reasonable force' to keep him from fleeing.

The accused was taken to Morigaon Civil Hospital with a single gunshot wound to his leg. He was afterwards sent to the GMCH (Gauhati Medical College and Hospital). On June 23, Das was taken from his home in the Kalibari neighbourhood near Guwahati Railway Station by a group of four people. In this respect, his family members filed a case (217/21 U/S 448/365/34 IPC) at the Latasil Police Station. On June 28, he was rescued.

On Monday evening, police detained two more people for their role in the kidnapping case: Sanju Bordoloi and Satya Bordoloi. Six people have been detained in relation with Das' kidnapping thus far. Apart from Singh, Sanju Bordoloi, and Satya Bordoloi, the other three accused are Jagiroad PS Home Guard Suraj Pator, Forest Guard Battalion member Jiten Bailung, and Maneswar Das, a resident of Gheguwa hill.

It should also be noted that the Palashbari Police have detained kidnap victim Ajit Das on suspicion of being involved in a narcotics smuggling ring. He is currently being held in police custody for two days, and a case — 405/21 u/s 21/29 of the NDPS Act — has been filed.

It should be mentioned that Das, a leasee of Guwahati Railway Station parking, was abducted from his home in the Kalibari neighbourhood near Guwahati Railway Station on June 23 by a gang of four people. On June 28, he was rescued.
